Creating a consistent approach to measuring how digital services perform

Our goal

Key government services are measured by consistent metrics of digital performance and performance data is readily available to inform progress reviews and improvements.

What this means for you

This initiative does not cover the whole UK. Whether it applies depends on the service and where it is available. The Devolved Governments decide how it will apply in their area.

  • Reliable, user-friendly digital services: ongoing improvements to the services you use will mean they perform better for you.
  • Better value: you can be confident that taxpayer money is being spent wisely on services that work and are constantly improving.
  • Improved digital service performance: if you work in government, you’ll find it easier to understand how your services are performing and make evidence-led improvements.

Our progress so far

Starting with three pilot departments, GDS has developed a shared, cross-government approach for measuring and improving the performance of digital products and services, technology infrastructure and resilience, and digital capability. This has involved creating custom performance dashboards for each department and launching a twice-yearly Digital Business Review process, led by GDS, to review progress and identify support needed.

What we’re planning to do next

Departments will start sharing annual outcome-based data on the performance of their services with each other, with Secretaries of State held accountable in regular reviews. This will encourage open working and drive evidence-led improvements across digital government.
