Making public services work for you

We’re running a public consultation to understand your views on how digital ID should be built and how you’ll use it in everyday life.

The online consultation has now closed

The online consultation has now closed to the public. The next step is the People’s Panel on digital ID, which will bring together a diverse group of people to consider different perspectives and debate trade-offs of digital ID.

The results from both stages of the consultation process will then be considered and responded to as we progress with designing a useful, inclusive and trusted digital ID.

Keep up to date with digital ID here.

What is the government’s digital ID?

For too long, trying to get help or support has involved endless telephone calls, complicated printed forms and having to tell your story multiple times to different parts of government.

We want to change that and make public services work for you.

To do that, you will need to prove who you are digitally, just like you do with your online banking or online shopping. This is your digital identity. When we know who you are, we know what help we can give you and keep you up to date.

How can I have my say ?

We want the digital ID system to work for you. We’re launching a nationwide conversation to listen to real people to ensure this system makes your life easier.

The consultation closed on 5 May.

Following the consultation, people like you will be invited to debate and inform how the digital ID system is designed and built – discussing the range of views and making recommendations on areas like what information digital ID holds and who can access it. The government will publish its response on GOV.UK later this year.

How could digital ID work ?

The new digital ID is being designed to remove barriers to public services and beyond – making them more convenient, secure, and inclusive, while giving you greater control over your data.

Less repeating yourself

We want to move away from the frustration of feeling lost in a system of call centres, paperwork and the need to tell your story multiple times to different parts of government. The digital ID system will help to make public services work for you: in one place, at the touch of your fingers.

Secure and free

The digital ID system will give you quick access to your government app, helping you prove who you are securely. This free tool, using the latest security features – just like those in your banking app – will make accessing public services quick and easy, if you prefer to do it that way
