The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) and Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) are transforming their services to make them easier, faster and more reliable. By harnessing AI and data optimisation, they’re designing modern digital services that meet users’ needs.
Our goal
UK driving services are simpler to use and delivered digitally by default.
What this means for you
This initiative applies in England, Wales, and Scotland only.
If you use driving services in the UK, you’ll experience:
- Faster services: you’ll be able complete essential tasks like renewing your licence, booking a driving test, or keeping your vehicle records up to date more quickly and easily.
- Reduced friction: you’ll spend less time navigating difficult systems and processes, saving you time, stress, and effort, as services will be more joined-up.
Our progress so far
April 2025: DVLA services are now accessible via GOV.UK One Login
You can now access DVLA digital services available through the Driver and Vehicle Account via GOV.UK One Login.
July 2025: rolled out new functionality for bookings and payments
You’re now able to access British Sign Language translation when booking your theory test through the digital service, and pay more securely for DVSA services via GOV.UK Pay.
September 2025: introduced AI-enabled customer service
You’re now able to use interactive voice response technology and receive automated call transcription and summaries for DVLA services. This helps you get support quicker by gathering information to direct you to the right route, reducing the need for lengthy calls and supporting more consistent, high-quality experiences.
November 2025: introduced digital reminders for licence renewals
You’re now able to sign up for digital reminders for your 10 year licence renewal via a new DVLA service available through the DVLA Driver and Vehicles Account. This will help you avoid missing renewal deadlines, and allow you to continue driving legally.
December 2025: exchange driving licences online
You’re now able to apply to exchange your driving licence via your DVLA Driver and Vehicles Account, removing the reliance on submitting paper forms and postal applications.
December 2025: launched AI document processing for operator licensing
If you’re a haulier or public service vehicle operator, new AI tools are available to DVSA staff to speed up document handling, reducing your waiting times and administrative burden.
What we’re planning to do next
March 2026: launch new digital service for drivers with medical conditions
You’ll be able to notify DVLA of any medical conditions and renewal of your medical licence through a new digital service, available via the DVLA Driver and Vehicles Account. It allows you to see the status of the application as it progresses, supported by a redesigned casework system to replace the legacy technology in use currently. Customers will have clearer, faster updates and help DVLA manage your application more efficiently and consistently.
June 2026: test new driving test booking service
DVSA will begin testing its new Driver Services Platform with a subset of users. This will provide important insights to improve the system and ensure the final service is reliable and based on your needs.
