Delivering personalised and proactive services through the GOV.UK app

Our goal

Everyone can easily find and securely access public services that are personalised to their needs.

What this means for you

This initiative applies in England and Wales only.

  • Quick and easy access: you’ll be able to easily find the information most relevant to you and return to it quickly whenever you need it, giving you your time back – no more hunting around or repeating yourself.
  • Personalised experience: by signing into the app with GOV.UK One Login, you’ll be able to easily and securely access services and guidance tailored to your circumstances.
  • Proactive support: the app will give you proactive support by suggesting personalised content, sending you helpful notifications and connecting you to local services.
  • Get your questions answered: you’ll be able to ask questions and get quick, direct answers based on reliable GOV.UK guidance, using the AI-powered GOV.UK Chat. Think of it as having a knowledgeable assistant for all your government queries.

Our progress so far

You can now download and use the GOV.UK app in England and Wales. You can save relevant topics to a customisable home screen, helping you get to the content you need most. You can also track your activity, making it easier to return to content you need to access regularly. The app helps you find services for your local area by connecting you with your local council’s website upon entering your postcode. Enhanced with an AI-powered search and the ability to receive important updates and deadlines via push notifications, the app allows you to stay informed.

What we’re planning to do next

You’ll be able to get answers to your questions about GOV.UK guidance quickly, accurately and in the way you would write or speak in everyday life using the GOV.UK Chat product.

GDS will start experimenting with an AI assistant to see how it can move from providing answers to curating next steps and completing tasks for you. Our first pilot will help understand how an AI assistant can help 16 to 24 year olds explore their career options; understand what’s available to them, make decisions and take the next step in their career, such as applying for jobs, training or apprenticeships.

You’ll benefit from new features in the app designed to make finding information and getting support even easier. GDS will also begin to introduce services for you built directly into the app: in partnership with DVLA, you’ll gain easy access to your digital driving licence by linking to the GOV.UK Wallet, driving and vehicle information and personalised notifications; and in partnership with DWP, you’ll be able to access and manage benefits, including proving your eligibility. GDS will also begin to introduce proactive push notifications which will alert you to important information about the services you use or are interested in.

GDS will run an initial discovery to understand the best way for you to receive and view all your official government documents and correspondence securely in one place.
