The Government Digital Service (GDS) is creating a quick and secure way for you to access and use government documents, like your driving licence, from your phone.
Our goal
All government credentials (certificates or proofs of entitlement to a service) are available digitally and securely in the GOV.UK Wallet by the end of 2027.
What this means for you
This initiative applies UK-wide.
The GOV.UK Wallet will allow you to store your most important government issued credentials in one place on your mobile device, secured by our technology. You’ll be able to conveniently access these and share them when you need to help you access government services and those in the wider economy.
- Faster access to services: the GOV.UK Wallet puts a stop to tracking down, filing and losing endless pieces of paper that are often needed to access services. Now you’ll be able to securely store and share your government credentials at your convenience, saving precious time, giving quicker access to services, and allowing you to get on with your day.
- Valid and up to date documents instantly: you can be sure your credentials are always up to date, with renewals made more straightforward and secure than sending away for physical replacements. This saves you time and hassle, whether you’re opening an account or proving your eligibility for a service, or even just collecting a parcel.
- A secure way to use and share: you’ll be able to store and access all your government digital credentials in one place on your phone, giving you better control of where your data is and how you share it. Security industry standards are being aligned to and work with the private sector is underway to enable secure end-to-end checking when you use your credentials to access private sector services, like buying alcohol or setting up a bank account.
Our progress so far
October 2025: launched digital Veteran Card
If you’re a veteran, you now have the option to use the digital HM Armed Forces Veteran Card as an addition to your physical card. Almost 2 million veterans can now quickly prove their status this way, making it easier to access key services, benefits and discounts such as registering with GPs and gaining discounted entry to local museums.
December 2025: tested digital driving licences
GDS tested digital driving licences through a limited trial. We’ll continue to test, build and iterate in 2026, working closely with the private sector to enable the development of secure checking services. Following a wider public rollout in England, Wales and Scotland in 2026, you’ll be able to store your driving licence on your phone, making it easier and faster to prove who you’re and your driving entitlements.
What we’re planning to do next
2026 onwards: expand GOV.UK Wallet
GDS will continue to build and test new features for the GOV.UK Wallet. This ongoing work means you’ll be able to safely and easily store more government digitised credentials in one place, including features that will support the new national digital ID.
