What the roadmap is

The roadmap is an action plan for what’s next. It doesn’t capture everything happening across the public sector, but it brings together some of the most important products, platforms and transformation initiatives planned between now and 2030. This is important because it shows how digitalisation across government is improving your public services, increasing accessibility and inclusiveness, and making them better value for money.

The roadmap is not a once and done item. As projects in discovery phases progress, teams find better ways to respond to your needs, and technology itself evolves, so too will the roadmap. This roadmap is an iterative and transparent record of government’s digital priorities and we’ll update it regularly to keep you fully informed.

If you live in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland

  • The UK government is committed to delivering excellent digital services for everyone. However, the way public services are delivered varies across the UK.
  • Some initiatives in this roadmap, such as border security and immigration, are UK-wide and will apply to you regardless of where you live. Other services, such as health and education, are devolved. This means the Scottish Government, Welsh Government and Northern Ireland Executive are responsible for designing and delivering these services in their respective nations.
  • Throughout this document, we have indicated where a service is UK-wide or the responsibility of the devolved government. Where a service is devolved, we are working closely with the devolved government to share data, learning and technology standards. This ensures that even where systems differ, we are working towards a consistent, high-quality experience for all citizens across the UK.

Alongside this, we’re ensuring that the systems you use are modern, secure and fit for purpose, reducing downtime, protecting data and improving reliability, by actively remediating legacy technology and overhauling commercial arrangements.

Making it happen

We know that brilliant digital delivery alone isn’t enough – lasting transformation also relies on reforming the way government funds, staffs, assures and procures. That’s why we’re working closely with the Cabinet Office and HM Treasury to improve the operating environment for delivery teams – making it simpler and faster to deliver, and embedding multidisciplinary working through changes to controls, people development and funding models. Ultimately this means better, more efficient services that meet people’s needs and deliver real public value, with a full potential prize of over £45 billion a year in unrealised savings and productivity benefits.
